Soundtrack Research

Researching soundtracks used in popular vampire films will give an insight into the common style and genre expected in a vampire themed film.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula – 1992

The style of music used throughout this movie is very melodic and ominous, tempos are surprisingly slower with occasional crescendos creating dramatic impact.

Interview with a vampire – 1994

Again similar to the style of music used in Bram Stokers Dracula, the music used throughout the film is melodic and ominous but it does make use of some faster tempos including some indie/rock genres from the guns and roses.

Fright Night – 2011

In this movie we hear a more vocal soundtrack with most of the music from rock and roll or heavy metal genres, the music is aggressive and high energy. It also includes some of the dark melodic sounds heard from the previous movies, but are slightly cheesy and almost jokey compared to the rest of the soundtrack.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter – 2012

This movie uses gothic synths and heavy metal/grunge to bring high energy and atmosphere.

The Lost Boys – 1987

The style of this soundtrack is more upbeat than the others, although it includes some dramatic elements, the use of 80’s rock and roll brings a laid back not so serious feel to the soundtrack.

Twilight – 2008

The music from this soundtrack has a mixture of upbeat pop rock and deep melodic pieces, with the addition of a love song here and there representing the movies value as a love story.

From the soundtracks explored you can see a common pattern in the use of music. Melodic dark & deep pieces mixed with high energy rock/metal tracks depicting the style of movie and scene. With all the soundtracks you have to choose carefully the music you wish to associate with the film and what you want your audience to feel. I will use these soundtracks for inspiration and guidance in choosing and creating the soundtrack for our vampire project. They will also help in finding and matching sound effects which will be used in post production.
